# Aztec Achieves Stage 2 Rollup Decentralization

Aztec achieved Stage 2 rollup decentralization per L2BEAT standards after its onchain governance revoked ownership of the core rollup smart contract. The change makes the critical contract code and configuration parameters completely immutable, eliminating the need for long governance delays. Consequently, the latest Aztec upgrade reduced the governance delay from 30 days to just two days. Users retain the ability to withdraw assets at any time via an immutable onchain escape hatch. According to L2BEAT, the transition to full immutability introduces a notable security trade-off. Because the code cannot be overridden by an administrator, any critical vulnerabilities discovered in the proof system cannot be patched in-place. To resolve future bugs, developers must deploy an entirely new rollup version, which the sequencer set must then choose to migrate to once approved by governance. L2BEAT noted that future Aztec contract designs will likely enshrine immutable escape hatches while preserving governance permissions for other essential non-rollup functions.
