OpenZeppelin released its Defender 2.0 security platform for general availability, allowing developers to integrate security tools, smart contract operations, and automate actions directly within their applications. Defender safeguards deployed contracts against known risk parameters. Defender features a Code Inspector, an automated tool that identifies and flags vulnerabilities. Code Inspector automatically generates comprehensive reports for each pull request, providing users with a detailed rundown of potential issues. The Defender Deploy API supports deterministic contract deployments across chains. Defender supports over 40 chains and customizable EVM network configurations. Users on the Defender 1.0 release are required to migrate to 2.0, as 1.0 will be deprecated by June.
Coinbase encountered degraded performance on its exchange amid a market rally. Earlier today, Bitcoin surged past $63,000, while Ethereum reached $3,500. The overall crypto market cap saw an increase from $2.3 trillion to $2.45 trillion. Coinbase users reported witnessing a zero balance on their accounts during the outage. Performance was restored on Coinbase approximately three hours after the surge. CEO Brian Armstrong stated that the team had prepared a traffic surge of about ten times the usual volume, but the recent influx of users surpassed that projection. Currently, the market has stabilized, with Ethereum trading around $3,340 at press time.
Coinbase Cloud announced support for Nethermind and Erigon execution clients into its Ethereum staking infrastructure. The move follows a commitment regarding plans to diversify its clients beyond Geth. Coinbase aims to achieve an even distribution of execution client software across Geth, Nethermind, and Erigon. The activation of Nethermind clients by Coinbase is scheduled to be rolled out this week. Ethereum's multi-client philosophy serves to safeguard against the risks associated with reliance on a single client. Data from clientdiversity.org indicates that Geth dominates as the supermajority client with over 70% market share.
The Ethereum Ecosystem Support Program (ESP) launched the 4844 Data Challenge, inviting data enthusiasts to dive into the analysis and interpretation of insights from EIP-4844 data on Ethereum. The competition aims to gather submissions documenting the most compelling 4844 data insights in an easy-to-read blog post. Participants have until June 14, 2024, to submit their entries for an opportunity to win a share of a $30,000 prize pool. EIP-4844 is scheduled to activate on Ethereum mainnet on March 13th.

The Ethereum Foundation formally announced that the Dencun upgrade will activate on Ethereum mainnet at epoch 269568, occuring on March 13, 2024 at 13:55 UTC. Ethereum node operators and stakers are required to update both execution layer and consensus layer client software to the latest version compatible with Dencun. The foundation will also be hosting a community live stream during the upgrade's activation. The upgrade includes a total of 9 EIPs, with protodanksharding EIP-4844 being the most notable. Core developers have successfully deployed Dencun on the Goerli, Sepolia, and Holesky testnets over the last two months.
Rollup-as-a-service provider AltLayer integrated support for Superchain rollups into its platform. The integration enables teams to launch OP Stack chains that are part of the Superchain, with AltLayer managing and maintaining the underlying node infrastructure. The Superchain is a collective of OP Stack chains with shared security. AltLayer is also working with OP Labs to develop a new fault-prover based on WASM. This new proof mechanism will be available alongside OP Lab’s Cannon fault-proof system, adding a layer of redundancy. Multi-proof systems strengthen network security by reducing the vulnerability associated with a single point of failure.
Obol Network unveiled its research and development roadmap for the next iteration of its distributed validator technology protocol, dubbed Obol 2.0. The roadmap includes initiatives for shifting towards Publicly Verifiable Secret Sharing, enhancing security against key leaks, and adopting more efficient consensus protocols. The roadmap also aims to support advanced mechanisms for block building and proposal and better support liquid staking protocols. The initiative is being pursued in partnership with Nethermind Research, which is set to develop its own implementation for Obol. By distributing a validator's key among several nodes, DVs increase Ethereum's resilience, ensuring continued validation.
Uniswap unveiled Uniswap Extension, a new browser wallet set for release in the coming month. The extension differs from existing options like MetaMask by integrating directly into the browser's sidebar, rather than appearing in a pop-up window. The feature allows users to carry out swap, send, and receive transactions directly from the sidebar of their browser. A waitlist for the Uniswap Extension is now open for users who created a uni.eth subdomain. Uniswap also rolled out support for limit orders on its DEX.

Ether is up 2% over the last 24 hours, hitting a peak of $3,200, a price last seen in May 2022.
Avail, a modular blockchain focused on data availability, introduced the Avail Trinity, a framework comprising of three key phases, including Avail DA, Avail Nexus, and Fusion Security. Avail Trinity is designed to enhance scalability, unification, and security for the rollup ecosystem. Avail DA provides a scalable and secure platform for data storage, leveraging validity proofs and data availability sampling (DAS). Avail Nexus enhances interoperability by serving as a unifying coordination rollup that includes a proof aggregation layer and a mechanism for sequencer selection. Fusion Security increases Avail’s cryptoeconomic security by leveraging native assets from other ecosystems, like Ethereum, to support Avail's consensus mechanism. Avail also secured a $27 million seed investment, led by Founders Fund and Dragonfly.
DeFi Saver released a new interface for managing positions on LlamaLend, a lending protocol centered around crvUSD developed by Curve Finance. LlamaLend introduces isolated pools that integrate with crvUSD, alongside an innovative liquidation approach named the Lending-Liquidating AMM Algorithm (LLAMMA). The LLAMMA uses a soft liquidation process for collateral, converting it into crvUSD, instead of an abrupt liquidation, which can trigger a cascade of liquidations for large positions. The mechanism reverses the conversion from crvUSD to the original collateral when market conditions improve. DeFi Saver is a dashboard aggregator for managing assets across various protocols.
Ethereum researcher Mike Neuder and Gauntlet CEO Tarun Chitra have co-authored an Ethresearch article on the risks associated with liquid restaking tokens (LRTs). Their study compares LRTs with bonds, L1 staking, EigenLayer AVS positions, and Liquid Staking Tokens (LSTs), examining factors such as liquidity, yield, duration, default risk, and how they fit into an investment portfolio. The article points out the risks of LRTs, including the increased complexity from layering protocols, additional slashing conditions, macroeconomic and market fluctuations, and operational risks. The paper aims to underscore the increased risk that accompanies the rewards offered by holding LRTs. The LRT ecosystem's TVL has surpasses $4 billion.
