EF Announces zkAPI

The Ethereum Foundation and Open Anonymity Project developed zkAPI, a system for paying for metered API use without linking the payment to an account or API key. The release is now live on Ethereum mainnet and accessible in OA-chat, the Open Anonymity Project’s browser-based private AI chat. Users can pay for metered AI and other API access by depositing credits into an Ethereum vault, then authorize spending with zero-knowledge proofs. This separates payment records from API requests, though providers can still see prompts and network metadata such as IP addresses.

Users only pay for what they use and can withdraw any remaining balance onchain. The release includes a local client compatible with OpenAI and Ollama APIs.

EIP-8363 Declined For Hegotá

Ethereum core developers moved EIP-8363, the Tapered Issuance Burn proposal, to Declined for Inclusion (DFI) for Hegotá. Co-author Jerome de Tychey said the team agreed to withdraw the proposal, adding that issuance policy needs its own broader, community-driven process because fork scoping is not the right venue to settle the change. EIP-8363 would burn validator consensus-layer rewards over time, with issuance reaching zero when 50% of ETH is staked.

Its stated aim is to limit staking growth in support of network security, credible neutrality, resistance to capture, and ETH’s role as money. Two other proposals also moved to DFI during this week's call: EIP-8379, whose Engine API experimentation may continue outside the fork cadence; and EIP-8333, withdrawn by Lodestar over decoupling concerns.

Quick Slots Considered For Hegotá

EIP-8198, or Quick Slots, has moved to Considered for Inclusion (CFI) in Ethereum’s Hegotá upgrade. The proposal would reduce slot times from 12 seconds to 10 seconds, which results in faster L1 confirmation and finality speeds. The proposal benefits DEXs and L2s with fresher price updates and faster L2-to-L1 withdrawals. Based rollups and L2 interop that follow L1 slot timing could also see lower latency. CFI means developers are considering the proposal, not that it has been scheduled for inclusion. The proposal would need to advance to Scheduled for Inclusion before it is confirmed for the fork. Hegotá is Ethereum’s next planned hard fork after Glamsterdam.
