Hsiao-Wei Wang Steps Down As EF Co-Executive Director

Wang departs after a sabbatical, becoming the latest in a wave of Ethereum Foundation exits over the past six months.

Hsiao-Wei Wang announced she is stepping down as co-executive director and board member of the Ethereum Foundation, effective today, becoming the latest high-profile departure from the organization.

Wang took on the co-executive director role last year alongside Tomasz Stańczak, leading the foundation through one of its most challenging periods. She said the decision followed a sabbatical that gave her space to reflect on her priorities, and that Bastian guided the leadership transition during her break. She framed the move as the right moment to step back rather than a response to any single event. Her exit from the board leaves Vitalik Buterin, Aya Miyaguchi, and Patrick Storchenegger as the Ethereum Foundation's remaining board members.

Vitalik Buterin praised Wang as "a steadfast contributor to the Ethereum ecosystem for a decade," recalling her early work in the Ethereum research community and her efforts to make consensus research more organized and legible. He noted she had also built an active Ethereum community in Taipei. Buterin said Wang and Stańczak "voluntarily took on the burden of what is perhaps the most challenging position in the Ethereum Foundation" at a difficult time for both Ethereum and the wider world, handling the task "skillfully and gracefully."

Wang's exit extends a wave of departures from the Ethereum Foundation over the past six months. The EF named new leadership for its Protocol cluster in May after Tim Beiko, Barnabé Monnot, and Alex Stokes moved on, and longtime researcher Carl Beek departed the same month alongside researcher Julian Ma. Earlier, Josh Stark left the foundation one day after Trent Van Epps revealed his own exit. The leadership turnover comes as Buterin has outlined a narrower mandate for the EF, with an expanding board and a focus on work critical to Ethereum's resilience.
