Justin Drake Alerts On ECDSA Breakthroughs
Ethereum researcher Justin Drake is urging the blockchain industry to initiate bunker mode, a precautionary measure against the possibility that recent mathematical breakthroughs could break ECDSA wallet signatures before a traditional Quantum-Day, which is estimated to occur before 2030. Drake says the industry should brace for the risk that private keys could be recovered using available hardware like large GPU clusters, potentially occurring in months rather than years. Elliptic-curve cryptography uses an algebraic structure, which is vulnerable to mathematical advancements.
Hash-based wallet alternatives can minimize the structure-based risk. As a security precaution, Drake is urging large, sophisticated actors and institutional holders to begin a controlled, calm migration of assets to new addresses where public keys remain hidden behind a hash. He suggests that holders move the bulk of their funds and, whenever they sign a transaction, subsequently move remaining funds to a new address. Transferring assets to a fresh, never-used address protects them because the public key stays hidden until the first time those funds are spent.
Drake advocated for accelerating the Ethereum roadmap’s transition to hash-based cryptography. The announcement comes one week after Consensys founder Joseph Lubin transferred $350 million to a new wallet. MetaMask is also in the process of rotating its validator keys due to a potential security incident, although the details of the incident were not disclosed. Freedom Factory also introduced its first post-quantum hardware wallet called PQ1, which uses a SPHINCS+C10 hashing algorithm.
Lido Unveils Lido Lend
Lido Finance contributors have unveiled the development of Lido Lend, a decentralized lending market built on a modified fork of the Morpho Blue protocol. The proposed design uses isolated markets, screens deposits for compromised funds and aims to give lenders reliable exits during full utilization or liquidity crunches. Initial markets are expected to focus on blue-chip, price-correlated pairs such as ETH and stETH.
Lido will release detailed technical specifications, market parameters and audit reports in the coming weeks before the proposed lending market goes for a governance vote by the Lido DAO with a planned launch anticipated in Q4 2026.
Sepolia Testnet Hits 200m Gas
Ethereum researcher Toni Wahrstätter published an early analysis of Sepolia after the Glamsterdam activation, using data collected through EthPandaOps’ Xatu data collection pipeline. Sepolia's gas limit reached 200 million about eight hours after the Glamsterdam activation on the testnet. Across Besu, Erigon, Geth, Nethermind and Reth clients, median execution time per million gas fell after the fork.
At the same 40 million gas, a block that took Geth about 115 milliseconds before the fork took about 30 milliseconds afterward. Wahrstätter attributes the improvement to Block-Level Access Lists (EIP-7928), which let clients prefetch state and execute transactions in parallel, alongside gas repricing. Enshrined Proposer-Builder Separation (EIP-7732) separates the beacon block from the execution payload, giving nodes more time to execute.
