KelpDAO rsETH Is Now Fully Restored

The final tranche of rsETH has been deployed into the LayerZero lockbox. rsETH is now fully restored and operating.

The final tranche of 20,373.72 rsETH has been deployed into the LayerZero lockbox, closing the operational phase of the DeFi United recovery. Aave founder Stani Kulechov confirmed that "rsETH is now fully restored." Withdrawals and bridging are open, and all affected Aave WETH markets are operating under standard parameters.

The recovery followed the April 18 LayerZero bridge exploit in which an attacker minted 116,500 unbacked rsETH, borrowed an estimated $236 million in WETH across Aave, Compound, and Euler, and routed stolen funds through THORChain. DeFi United is a coordinated relief effort led by Aave service providers with major contributions from various DeFi protocols.

What The EF's Kohaku Initiative Is Building

Kassandra, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, outlined what the team is shipping for Kohaku, an open-source initiative for secure and private wallets on Ethereum.

Kassandra, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, outlined what the team is shipping for Kohaku, an open-source initiative for designing secure and private wallets on Ethereum. Kohaku's mission is to make end-to-end privacy as the default for all Ethereum users, while minimizing reliance on trusted third parties.

The immediate priority is embedding shielded pool protocols, such as Tornado Cash, Railgun, and Privacy Pools, directly into wallets via a wallet SDK. Kassandra added that a bigger unlock will be routing all private transactions through the ERC-4337 mempool using EIP-7702, eliminating reliance on specific relayers.

The Kohaku SDK is available in alpha. An experimental browser extension wallet is also in the works. Kassandra is also building a CLI wallet that uses the SDK directly, with a showcase planned for Berlin Blockchain Week.

Kohaku is one of the three CROPS-aligned technical north stars Vitalik Buterin named earlier today alongside FOCIL and EIP-8141 in his outline of where the Ethereum Foundation is heading.

Vitalik On What's Next For The Ethereum Foundation

Vitalik Buterin shares his view on what's next for the Ethereum Foundation, citing an expanding board, fewer ETH sales, and three CROPS-aligned goals.

Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin outlined his personal view on where the Ethereum Foundation is heading, offering clarity amid a wave of recent departures from the organization. On the exits, he stated that respected contributors sitting outside the EF, and it is "in fact necessary if we want important tasks to be able to attract outside capital."

Vitalik says the EF's original mandate, building chain software through the Serenity roadmap, was completed in 2022 with The Merge. He added that the EF will sell less ETH as it focuses only on work critical to Ethereum's resilience. It currently holds just 0.16% of all ETH. The board is also expanding and Buterin's own influence will continue to shrink, something he says he genuinely wants.

On the technical side, Buterin outlines three north stars, all on the CROPS dimension: building a provably bug-free Ethereum via AI-assisted formal verification; keeping available chain consensus; and minimizing intermediaries via FOCIL, EIP-8141, and Kohaku. He revealed that 90% of his net worth is in ETH, which he called the most high-value financial product that Ethereum produces.

The post lands amid the most concentrated wave of EF departures in years. Tim Beiko and Barnabé Monnot stepped down from protocol leadership on May 11, and Carl Beek announced his departure on May 19 alongside researcher Julian Ma.
