The Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance published an updated assessment of Ethereum's environmental footprint years after the Merge. The report conducted a bottom-up audit of 8,522 physical nodes, measuring actual hardware configurations and the carbon intensity of the grids powering them. The report found that Ethereum now consumes approximately 7.87 GWh of electricity annually, less than half the British Museum's annual energy use, running at a continuous draw of roughly 0.90 MW. The reduction is more than 99.9% below its pre-Merge baseline of around 2.4 GW, which once rivaled the electricity demand of a small country.
