Base Activates Denim Upgrade
Base activated Denim on mainnet, its fourth network upgrade introducing native 200ms block times, a 10x speed improvement over its previous 2 second block times. The update replaces 200ms Flashblock block confirmations with 200ms canonical blocks. The upgrade also brings BaseTime, a new mechanism that gives smart contracts and RPC clients millisecond-resolution timestamps while preserving full compatibility with Ethereum’s existing second-based time model.
Developers on Base are advised to review any logic that measures time in block counts. Denim also adds new compliance controls to the B20 token standard. Issuers can invert reusable compliance policies, executor policies now apply to every transfer path, and transfers, mints or seizures to a token’s own address fail to avoid locked funds. The upgrade aims to support faster trading and payments.
Reth Bug Stalls Nodes
A bug in Reth’s legacy state-root calculation caused some nodes on the execution layer to compute an incorrect root. A carefully crafted transaction interacting with certain contract storage layouts can trigger the edge case. The bug can cause unpatched nodes to stall or return incorrect state proofs. The issue affects Reth-based nodes and block builders using the legacy calculator, including OP Stack deployments.
Node operators should update to patched releases, including Reth v2.10.0, OP Reth v2.8.1, and Base v1.5.3. Base said it verified its current state root, patched its block builders, and released v1.5.3 to prevent validators from halting on invalid roots. The reported issue does not affect OP Stack or Base withdrawal systems, or ecosystem bridges that rely on receipt roots or multisignatures rather than state roots.
Lido Adds Firelight Loss Protection
Lido added Firelight, an onchain cover protocol, as an added layer of loss protection for its EarnETH and EarnUSD vault products. During an initial 30-day period, Firelight will cover eligible, approved losses up to 5.7% of EarnETH’s TVL and 8% of EarnUSD’s. Coverage applies at the vault level, meaning no action is needed from depositors. Eligible events include smart contract risks, oracle and governance failures, plus certain mechanism failures that cause bad debt, depegs or redemption problems.
The Lido DAO’s existing protection fund serves as a second layer of protection to absorb any remaining eligible loss. The protection fund holds $3 million in wstETH positions in EarnETH and $2 million in USDC positions in EarnUSD. The protection fund works by burning the Lido DAO’s shares after a confirmed loss reaches its threshold. The two layers have separate limits and conditions.
